Udupi, Apr 29, 2026: The Second Additional District and Sessions Court in Udupi has sentenced the accused to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of a mother and daughter that took place four years ago at Aatradi Madaga in the Hiriadka police station limits.
The convicted accused is Harish R., alias Ganesh (33), a resident of Bommanakatte in Bhadravathi, Shivamogga district.
Cheluvi (30), originally from Tamil Nadu, had married Subrahmanya of Manchi about 15 years ago. At the time of her marriage, she was working in an oil factory in Manipal, where she came in contact with a man named Rasheed, who was also employed there.
Later, differences arose between Cheluvi and her husband Subrahmanya, following which she left him and went to Mumbai with Rasheed, where they lived for about two years.
Subsequently, they moved to Karkala and stayed in a rented house. During that time, Cheluvi had two children, Preetham and Priya. Later, disputes arose between Cheluvi and Rasheed as well, after which she returned with her children to her mother’s house at Aatradi Madaga and started living there in a shed nearby.
Harish, a distant relative of Cheluvi, was married and had two children. Taking advantage of the fact that Cheluvi was separated from both her husbands, he frequently visited her house and pressured her to marry him.
Harish grew suspicious and resentful over Cheluvi allegedly talking to other men on the phone. On the night of May 8, 2022, when only Cheluvi and her daughter Priya were at home, he came there and picked a quarrel.
Later, after Cheluvi had gone to sleep, Harish strangled her to death using a shawl. He then killed her daughter Priya in the same manner, fearing that she might testify against him as a witness.
A case was registered at the Hiriadka Police Station. The then Brahmavar Circle Police Inspector Ananthapadmanabha investigated the case, arrested the accused, and filed the charge sheet before the court.
After hearing the case, the court found Harish guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 20,000.
