Vittal MelekudiaMangalore, June 10, 2012: The High Court has denied bail to Vittala Malekudiya, a student of mass communication and journalism at Mangalore University, who was arrested by the Anti Naxal Force (ANF) for alleged association with Naxals.

Vittala had appealed for interim bail to the High Court, but the Karnataka Police had also appealed to the court not to grant bail to Vittala as the police had enough evidence in the form of newspaper cuttings, incriminating documents, and pro-Naxal literature, seized from his house.

The state police also accused Vittala of providing food and shelter to several Naxals in his house and had participated in a Naxal training camp in the Western Ghats. The state police also stated that Vittala might join the Naxal movement if the court grants him bail.

Justice Subhash B. Adi heard the case and rejected Vittala’s bail plea.

Vittala, who was arrested on March 3, 2012 with his father Lingappa Malekudiya, had appealed to the High Court to grant him bail and withdraw the FIR filed against him. The local court had refused to grant him bail because he was booked under Sections 10 and Sections 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Section 121 of the IPC; however, the local court had permitted him to answer his semester examinations under tight police security.
