Heavy rains trigger flooding on Udupi–Manipal road, commuters face major disruptions

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, May 20, 2025: Heavy rainfall that began early Tuesday morning, May 20, has once again led to artificial flooding on the crucial Udupi–Manipal Road, causing significant inconvenience for commuters.

The stretch near INOX and Bacchus Inn in Manipal was completely submerged, resembling a flowing river and forcing many vehicles to divert to alternative routes to reach Manipal from Udupi. This road serves as a vital lifeline connecting Udupi to Manipal, home to prominent educational institutions and healthcare facilities.

However, due to the absence of a proper drainage system, rainwater quickly accumulated, turning the busy road into a waterlogged and hazardous zone. The forceful flow of water posed a serious threat, particularly to two-wheeler riders who struggled to maintain control of their vehicles. Even four-wheelers and heavy vehicles found it difficult to navigate the flooded stretch.

The disruption coincided with peak morning hours, impacting students, office-goers, and hospital visitors. With no immediate alternatives, many were forced to take longer detours, leading to traffic congestion and delays.

The water flow near the INOX junction was especially intense, flooding nearby low-lying areas. Artificial flooding has become a recurring issue in this region during the monsoon, yet no permanent solution has been implemented. Despite the growing traffic and population in Manipal, drainage infrastructure remains grossly inadequate.

The waterlogging also affected local businesses, disrupting daily operations. Given Manipal’s status as a major hub for education and healthcare, urgently addressing this persistent problem is essential to ensure the safety and convenience of thousands who travel this route daily.
