Mangaluru, July 9, 2026: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds damaged a government school building in Puttur taluk, while moderate rainfall continued across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Wednesday.
At the Government Model Higher Primary School in Haradi, one of the largest schools in Puttur taluk in terms of student strength, roof tiles were blown away while students were attending classes on July 7. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The fifth-grade classroom, built with a tiled roof over an RCC structure to accommodate the large number of students, sustained damage after strong winds ripped off several roof tiles. School authorities immediately shifted students to a safer location.
Rainwater entered the classroom after the roof was damaged. Officials from the Puttur City Municipal Council and the Education Department visited the school and inspected the damage. The school’s compound wall, which had partially collapsed due to continuous rainfall, completely gave way on Wednesday.

Kumaradhara Bathing Ghat Partially Submerged
At Kukke Subrahmanya Temple, heavy rainfall over the past few days caused rivers and streams to swell, leading to the partial submergence of the Kumaradhara bathing ghat on Tuesday night.
The rising water level in the Kumaradhara River carried logs, bamboo and other debris downstream, which accumulated near the check dam.
Temple authorities and local officials advised devotees not to enter the river as parts of the Adi Subrahmanya and Kumaradhara bathing ghats remained submerged. Temple staff were deployed to prevent devotees from accessing the water.
The river level receded on Wednesday as rainfall intensity reduced.
