Heavy rain, strong winds lash coastal Karnataka; orange alert issued for DK, Udupi

Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 1, 2026: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Friday, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas, uprooting trees, damaging houses and prompting authorities to issue safety advisories as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast more rain.

In Dakshina Kannada, widespread rainfall was recorded in Mangaluru, Puttur, Uppinangady, Karaya, Kalleri, Madanthyaru, Guruvayanakere, Dharmasthala, Kokkada, Venur, Nelyadi, Kadaba, Sullia, Subrahmanya, Bellare, Panja, Kalmakaru, Moodbidri, Mulki, Panambur, Ullal, Bajpe, Vitla, Kanyana and Peruvai. Several low-lying areas in Mangaluru city experienced waterlogging following continuous showers.

In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner urged parents to ensure that children stay away from waterlogged areas, lakes, riverbanks and seashores. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

District and taluk-level officials have been directed to remain at their headquarters to ensure effective disaster management. They have also been instructed to respond promptly to public complaints, maintain constant contact with the District Control Room and keep relief centres ready in every taluk.

Meanwhile, Udupi district also witnessed widespread rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Trees were uprooted at several places, resulting in damage to houses.

A tree fell on a house in the DCM Colony of Kasturba Ward in Udupi city, causing partial damage. While intermittent rain was reported during the morning, some areas experienced brief sunny spells in the afternoon before heavy showers returned later in the day.

Light to moderate rainfall was recorded across Udupi, Manipal, Kundapura, Byndoor, Hebri, Karkala, Kapu and Brahmavar taluks, with rural areas receiving heavier showers during the evening. Rising water levels in rivers, streams and canals, along with waterlogging on several roads, caused inconvenience to motorists.

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts for August 1, forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Wind speeds of up to 60 kmph are expected along the coast, and fishermen have once again been advised not to venture into the sea. Authorities have also urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
