Heavy Rain: Holiday Declared for Schools in Dakshina Kannada; DC Warns Against Fake Holiday Messages

Mangaluru, Aug. 2, 2026: In view of continuing heavy rainfall and forecasts of more showers, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has declared a holiday for educational institutions in all 9 taluks on Monday, August 3, as a precautionary measure.

In the Mangaluru sub-division (Mangaluru, Bantwal, Moodbidri, Mulki and Ullal), the holiday has been declared for all anganwadi centres and government, aided and private primary and high schools up to Class 10, including residential schools.

In the Puttur sub-division (Puttur, Belthangady, Sullia and Kadaba), the holiday extends to all anganwadi centres, government, aided and private primary and high schools, pre-university colleges and educational institutions up to Class 12, including residential schools and colleges.

The decision was taken based on forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), which indicated that the prevailing weather conditions are likely to continue.

The District Disaster Management Authority has directed all institutions to strictly comply with the holiday order, warning that violations will invite legal action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Parents have been advised not to allow children near waterlogged areas, ponds, lakes, rivers or the seashore. Fishermen have also been instructed not to venture into the sea until further notice.

District and taluk-level officials have been asked to remain at their headquarters, ensure prompt disaster response and maintain constant communication with the Deputy Commissioner’s control room. Authorities have also been instructed to keep relief centres ready in all taluks to handle rain-related emergencies.

DC Warns Against Fake Holiday Messages

Meanwhile, a fake social media message claiming that a holiday had been declared for schools and second PU colleges on Monday has been circulating in the name of the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner.

Deputy Commissioner Darshan H. V. warned of strict action against those spreading false information and creating public confusion. He said that under Section 54 of the Disaster Management Act, anyone found circulating false alarms or warnings about disasters or holidays that cause panic can face imprisonment of up to one year, a fine, or both.
