
Mangalore, Sep 15, 2013: PUCL National President Prof. Prabhaker Sinha has regretted the fact that innocent people continue to be detained by the police using oppressive laws like Maintenance of Indian Secrets Act and Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).

Addressing a conference on ‘Present situation of human rights in India and fate of democracy,” organised by the PUCL at the Bishop Jattanna Hall on September 14, Saturday, he even referred to laws like Police Act 1861 and Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, and said some of the laws passed in post independent India were worse than those passed during British times.
He alleged that the government functioned not to benefit the people but a handful of capitalists.
Kavitha Srivastava, PUCL Secretary and Human Rights Activist, who also spoke, referred to the BJP’s nomination of Modi as PM candidate and added several national media companies have been bought by corporates.It is these corporate companies which are trying to bring Modi to power, she alleged.
“ There are several instances to prove how individuals or organizations opposing Modi were crushed. Similarly, all dissent against him will be crushed once he comes to power,” she said.
