Mangaluru, Oct 20, 2025: Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath has said that Government Wenlock Hospital, which is the district hospital, has reduced the number of intensive care units (ICUs) owing to dearth of funds, causing a problem for patients.

In his letter dated October 17, 2025 to Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao, the MLA said that patients from five neighbouring districts come to the hospital for emergency treatments and that reducing the number of ICUs is coming in the way of treating them.

During the pandemic, the hospital had over 115 ICUs. Moreover, it housed over 250 beds with oxygen supply when COVID-19 hit. The government should increase the number of ICUs at the hospital, he said.

Meanwhile, in a media statement on Sunday, Mr. Kamath said that the government should not play with the health of the people.

When he was elected as MLA, the hospital had 16 ICUs. Later, it was increased to over 115.

Mr. Rao, who is also the in-charge Minister of Dakshina Kannada, said that the need of the people should not be ignored, adding that if there is a shortage of staff nurses in the hospital, the government should do the needful to appoint them.
