Mangaluru, January 14, 2026: The district administration has clarified that there will be no change in the government holiday declared on the occasion of Makara Sankranti in Dakshina Kannada district, and the holiday will be observed on January 15.
Makara Sankranti is celebrated in the district on January 14. However, some sections of the public had raised objections to the government holiday being fixed on January 15 instead of January 14. Speaker U.T. Khader and District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had brought the issue to the notice of the government and requested that the holiday be declared on January 14.
Responding to the issue, Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. said that the Speaker had discussed the matter with him and had indicated that a formal request would be sent to the government.
However, the Deputy Commissioner clarified that no official request seeking a holiday on January 14 had been received. He stated that if such a request had been submitted, the administration would have examined the matter. Since no appeal was made, there is no reason to change the holiday, and accordingly, the government holiday will remain on January 15.
Meanwhile, some private educational institutions and offices have declared a holiday on Wednesday. Government schools, colleges, and offices will observe the holiday on Thursday.
