Speaking on the occasion, Dr. N.V. Adyanthaya said that it is a great honour and privilege for him to lay the foundation stone for the Research and Super Specialty Block and Advanced Cancer Centre. Congratulating Mr. Vinaya Hegde and Nitte Education Trust, he said that it is no mean achievement for a 35 years old institution in the field of Industries and Health care. It is indeed a great contribution to humanity and healthcare.

It is a matter of gratification to us that one of our institutions, the Nitte Education Trust, has been in the forefront giving advanced healthcare and establishing a number of Medical and Dental clinics in villages of our state and outside.

“I feel sorry that the founder of Nitte Education Trust, Justice K.S.Hegde did not live long enough to see the fruits of his labour for which he worked so determinedly” he added.

“Medical profession is basically a social concern with the health and life of people. Unlike in western countries, our people are plagued by poverty. Despite this, our doctors have kept standard of medical ethics bringing great name and fame to the profession. I offer my advice to our people : ‘whenever you are sick take time to learn about the illness, because health is most precious and knowledge is important especially for the treatment of illness’. ‘Prevention is better than cure’ is an ancient saying that is constantly forgotten” he reminded.

“Any organization without a leader and a guide will be difficult to run. Fortunately, we have Mr. Vinaya Hegde who has proved his flawless leadership in building this great institution. He is thus a model citizen with a strong sense of duty. I am sure with his able guidance the institution will have greater future with added achievements”.

In his welcome address Dr. Shantaram Shetty, Vice Chancellor, Nitte University said that it is great honour to have Dr. N.V. Adyanthaya to lay the foundation stone for the Research and Super specialty block and Advanced Cancer centre. “It is a gift to us on his Hundredth birthday” he added. Incidentally, June 20th is the Hundredth birthday of Dr. N.V. Adyanthaya.

Elaborating the details of the new block, Dr. Shantharam Shetty said that the Centre will be a state –of-the art Treatment Centre for Cancer patients. The Centre will have the most modern facilities like the Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), image Guided Ration Therapy (IGRT), Brachytheraphy, in addition to the diagnostic facilities like biopsy , endoscopy, X-rays, CT scanning, MRI scanning, Ultra Sound and therapeutic facilities like surgery and Chemotherapy, Dr Shetty added. The IMRT treatment has the ability top deliver a higher radiation dose within the tumor, thus causing more damage top the tumor and less damage to surrounding healthy tissues unlike the conventional radiation treatments. The areas most commonly treated with IMRT are prostate, spine, lung, breast, kidney, pancreas, liver, larynx, tongue and sinus.

The side effects are lesser than that in the conventional radiation treatment. Nonetheless, centre will also have facility for palliative treatments. IGRT involves radiation treatment guided by specialized imaging test, such as CT Scan, Ultrasound or X-Rays. The process improves the accuracy of the radiation placement, and to reduce the exposure of healthy tissue during radiation treatments.

Brachytherapy is commonly used as an effective treatment for cervical, prostate, breast, and skin cancer. Brachytherapy can be completed in less time than other radiotherapy techniques. This can help reduce the chance of surviving cancer cells dividing and growing in the intervals between each radio-therapy dose.  The treatment is often performed on an out patient basis. This makes treatment accessible and convenient for many patients.

Going down the memory lane, he said, over the years, since 1979, starting with a school in Nitte, the Trust has grown into a giant institution serving the society in many ways than education and healthcare. He remembered his mother, her magnanimity in ‘Giving’ that she has instilled in him and the vision, his father, Justice K.S.Hegde, had him to follow.
