Former Dakshina Kannada DC, A.B. Ibrahim receives SIR notice over name discrepancy

Mangaluru, Sep 11, 2026: Former Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner and retired IAS officer A.B. Ibrahim has received a notice from the Election Commission under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, citing a discrepancy in his name in the voters’ list.

The notice directs Ibrahim to appear with supporting documents on September 29 to verify and rectify the discrepancy. He has, however, expressed displeasure and concern over being served the notice.

Ibrahim, who is a voter in the Narasimharajapura Assembly constituency in Mysuru, was reportedly served the notice after a difference was found between his name in the previous electoral roll and the current one. The notice asks him to appear with relevant documents to establish his identity and details. It also provides the contact number of the local Booth Level Officer (BLO) for assistance.

Former election officer questions SIR process

Ibrahim, who has served as a senior government official and election officer, expressed strong concern over the notice and the manner in which SIR instructions are being communicated.

He said some of the stringent instructions in the SIR notices, including warnings that providing incorrect information could lead to imprisonment, could create unnecessary fear among the general public.

The second page of the notice carries a general warning that voters could face punishment for furnishing incorrect information in the electoral roll.

Ibrahim pointed out that he had served as Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer from 2013 to 2016 and had successfully overseen several elections.

Despite having spent nearly 30 years in public service, he said he had received such a notice due to what appeared to be a technical discrepancy in the system. He questioned what ordinary citizens would have to face if such notices were being issued even to former election officials.

Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba also received SIR notice

Recently, Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba was also served an SIR notice over a discrepancy in his name in the electoral roll. The notice was subsequently withdrawn after the matter came to public attention.
