Taking the issue seriously, District Health Officer Dr Bairi has directed Dr Usha Rao, Chief Medical Officer of Ajjarkad Government Hospital to examine the students and submit a report. He also visited the hostel along with other officials and inspected the food grains stored in the hostel.Students of the hostel informed the DHO that they were served rice which had a foul smell since the past 15 days.
The rice is also parboiled, they complained and added the matter had been brought to the notice of the hostel warden and also the Social Welfare Department officials. They also said students have been suffering from health problems since one week and there was also an incident when a student who was on way to college, collapsed enroute due to stomach pain.
The District Health Officer then directed the Chie Medical Officer to visit the hostel once in 15 days and examine the health of students.
The visit of the DHO also revealed some other discrepancies in the hostel. The hostel which had a capacity of 120 had as many as 160 students. The hostel also lacked enough lavatories. It also came to light that the cooks did not maintain cleanliness while preparing food.
