
Udupi:, Nov 17, 2012 : Ganesh Shetty, a farmer at Santoor, found the remains of a Stone Age grave when he was leveling his field with an excavator on Nov 16, Friday.


Experts who visited Santoor, located 10kms from Padubidri, have expressed their opinion that the grave could be 2000 years old.
Prof. T. Murugeshi, an archeologist, said that Stone Age people used to bury their dead in rock-cut caves. They have also discovered pieces of clay urns in the grave.
Forty years ago, Mr. Shetty’s late father Mahalinga Shetty found a similar cave when he was sinking a well.
K. L. Kundantaya, another archeologist who visited the place, said that grave can be considered to be of the Stone Age.
A large number of history students and archeologists have visited this place to see the cave, which has a 2m wide mouth and a 2.5m wide interior. It is 2.93m deep and is in the shape of a pitcher.
Mr. Shetty says that it can accommodate a few people. He has also expressed his willingness to support research work on it.
