Eminent writer Edwin J F D’Souza passes away

Mangaluru, Oct 26, 2023: Edwin Joseph Francis D’Souza, affectionately referred to as Edwin J F D’Souza, a renowned Konkani writer who had been honored with the Kendra Sahitya Academy Award, peacefully passed away at the age of 75 in the city on Thursday, October 26.

 

Edwin J F DsouzaHe wrote 33 Konkani novels and over 100 short stories; he has won over 12  awards, one of his stories ’Chocolates’ published in Reader’s Digest and several of his works have been translated into six different languages including Kannada and English.

Born on June 14, 1948, in Valencia, Mangaluru, Edwin Joseph Francis D’Souza was an esteemed alumnus of St Aloysius (Autonomous) College, Mangaluru. He held a degree in commerce and a postgraduate diploma in Konkani, complemented by five online diplomas from a Bible School in the United States, where he specialized in Christian Theology.

One of his popular stories ’A  Cup of Hot Coffee’ was published by Khushwanth Singh in his anthology ’Our Favourite Indian Short Stories." Many of his stories  have been published by Kendra Sahitya Academy in  their publications Prateechi and Indian Literature. ’Poinn’ (The Journey), the first anthology of 22 short stories in Konkani authored by Edwin was immensely popular, while a trilogy ’Unna Bhavaadthase’ is being published by Karnataka Sahitya Academy in 2015 in a single volume.

Edwin D’Souza is survived by his wife, Marcelline Jane D’Souza, his daughter, Ruth Esther D’Souza, his son-in-law, Sudhakar Prabhu, and his grandchild, Anoushka Prabhu.
