Mangalore, Feb. 7, 2011: Dr. Mundkur Sudhakar Shetty, Orthopaedic surgeon, senior professor and chief of Orthopaedics department Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital, passed away at his residence on Monday, February 7. He had been diagnosed for cancer of the prostrate some three years back and had undergone treatment abroad. However for the last three months he had been ailing and his illness took a turn for the worse in the last few days. He was aged 65 years at the time of his death. Dr. Shetty is survived by his wife Amrita, two daughters and son-in-law Dr. Rohan Shetty, who is a neurosurgeon.
According to family sources, his body will be shifted to his hometown Mundkur, where the funeral will be performed at 5:00 p.m.
The large number of cars belonging to well wishers, which were seen parked outside his house on Kodialguthu East road (near 7th cross) for the last three days bear testimony to his personal popularity. IMA Mangalore Branch past president Dr. K. Mohandas Bhandary who visited him this morning said though he was in a weak condition, he was able to recognize him and made enquiries about a few things.
Hailing from Mundkur village near Kinnigoli, Dr. Shetty, did his MBBS from Bangalore Medical College, followed by D Orth from College of Physicians and Surgeons of Mumbai. He then went on to study MS (Orth) from Seth GS Medical College Mumbai and M.Ch. Orth from University of Liverpool, UK.
Dr. Mundkur Sudhaker Shetty was one of the renowned orthopaedic surgeons of the city. He had served at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore as Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopedics for several decades. After retiring from KMC, he has been serving as the Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Vice Dean of Yenepoya Medical College. He was also serving as Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Government Wenlock Hospital and City Hospital Research and Diagnostic Centre, Mangalore.
He was very active in professional and social circles. True to his significant contribution to his field, he was recently elected unopposed as President of the prestigious Orthopaedic Association of South Indian States (OASIS). He has earlier served as President Karnataka State Orthopedic Association. He had served Indian Medical Association (IMA), Mangalore Branch as President in 1993-94 and was one of the key persons spearheading IMA Trust. He has been regularly conducting training programmes for Orthopaedic postgraduates every year since 1982.
Dr. Shetty’s private practice was situated at Fracture and Orthopaedics Centre at Bunts Hostel Circle in the city.
On July 6th last year, Dr M Sudhakar Shetty was felicitated and conferred with the state level prestigious ‘Doctors Day Award’. Dr. Shetty is the only doctor from undivided Dakshina kannada district to be adorned with this coveted award.
Dr M Sudhakar Shetty was known to be a keen sportsman and avid shuttle badminton player.

Mangalore, Feb 7, 2011: IMA Mangaluru Branch has expressed deep anguish and sorrow over the sad demise of Dr. M. Sudhakar Shetty, Senior Orthopedic Surgeon, senior professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital today at the age of 65, following a brave battle with cancer of the prostrate.
A joint statement issued by Dr. Mukund, President and Dr. K. Mohandas Bhandary, Immediate Past President, described Dr. M. Sudhakar Shetty as a dutiful doctor who exhibited professional excellence along with great compassion for the suffering humanity. He was a great teacher too, having trained countless students to attain excellence in the field of medicine. IMA Mangaluru Branch is especially indebted to him for having served as the branch President during 1993-94.
