Elderly lady, 2 sons commit suicide

Bantwal, Nov 12, 2012 : An elderly lady and her two middle-aged sons committed suicide at Kolnad on Nov 11, Sunday.

 

 

The deceased are Leela (60), wife of Poovappa Shettigar of Netla Chanila in Goltamajal, and her sons Chinnappa (40) and Janardhan (42).

Leela went missing on the morning of Nov 10, Saturday. Her husband, sons, and neighbors began searching for her and could not locate her till Sunday morning. In the afternoon, even the sons went missing.

Relatives and neighbors stoppe d searching for them because they had no idea what was happening; however they started searching again at 7:00 p.m. and discovered the bodies of the mother and sons at a short distance from the house. They had hanged themselves from the branches of a tree.

The neighbors feel that the sons, who had gone searching for their mother, saw that she had committed suicide and decided to end their lives too.

The neighborhood, which had been making preparations to celebrate Diwali, has turned gloomy. A large number of people visited Poovappa’s house to offer condolences.

Poovappa and Leela have six children, one of who died a few years back. Janardhan was married to Vedavathi of Siddakatte in Udupi and Chinnappa was unmarried.

Although the deceased lived in the jurisdiction of the Bantwal police station, they had committed suicide in the jurisdiction of the Vittal police station. Police officers from both stations visited the house.

The Vittal police registered a case.
