Elderly Woman’s Death in Udupi Confirmed as Murder; Son Arrested

Udupi, June 22, 2025: The death of an elderly woman, Padmabai, initially thought to be due to natural causes, has been confirmed as a case of murder, with her son, Eesha Nayak (26), arrested for allegedly strangling her over financial and domestic disputes.

The incident was reported on the morning of June 19, when Shilpa, a relative, was informed by Nayak that Padmabai was found unresponsive in bed. She was rushed to the District Government Hospital in Ajjarkadu, where doctors declared her brought dead. Suspicion arose due to red marks on her neck.

Following a complaint, the Manipal Police registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR). A post-mortem examination conducted at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, revealed that Padmabai’s death was homicidal. Forensic experts estimated the time of death between 9:22 PM on June 18 and 9:45 AM on June 19.

Based on the findings, the police reclassified the case as murder. Investigations revealed that financial issues and ongoing family disputes led to the crime. Nayak was subsequently taken into custody and is set to be produced in court.
