Dr. S. Ayyappan speaks of utilization of marine resources

Mangalore, April 14, 2012 :Delivering the inaugural address after inaugurating the laboratory and office building of the Research Centre of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) on April 13 Friday, Dr. S. Ayyappan, the director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) said that marine resources can be utilized to provide drinking water as well as high value bioactive compounds.

Further, he predicted that India’s fish catch will grow from the present 6 million tons to 15 – 16 tons by 2017. He pointed out that, in spite of the fish famine scare, fish catch along the coast of Karnataka has become double.

The former dean of Fisheries College expressed his opinion that cooperation between research institutes in India is the need of the hour. Regarding the huge difference in fish catch data collected by CMFRI and the state government, he said that these two ought to communicate in an effective manner.

Dr. S. S. Honnappagol, the vice chancellor of Karnataka Veterinary, Animal, and Fisheries Sciences University; Dr. B. Meenakumari, the deputy general of ICAR; Dr. G. Syda Rao, the director of CMFRI; Dinesh Babu, the scientist-in-charge at CMFRI; and many others were also present.
