Mangalore, December 31: Dr. M. V. Shetty College honored Ashwin C. Shetty, who won gold for India in the Asian and Commonwealth Games, during a special felicitation ceremony held in the college premises on Dec 30, Thursday.

A team of physiotherapy students marked the beginning of the programme with an invocation. Prof. B. V. Kathyayini, the principal of Dr. M. V. Shetty College of Nursing, delivered the welcome address; and lecturer Carol D’Souza introduced Ashwini.


Dr. Ramgopal Shetty, the founder secretary of Dr. M. V. Shetty College, presented a cheque of Rs. 50,000 to Ashwini. Dr. Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, the superintendent of police, honored her with a memento and a shawl.


Apparently overwhelmed with the honour, Ashwini said that she was scared of travelling to strange places during the initial days of her career, but that she faced all obstacles without giving up hopes and went to distant places to participate in sports events. She advised all sportspersons to be courageous and work confidently to achieve their goals. Expressing her gratitude to her parents and her coach, she said that she will continue to work hard and win gold for the country at the Olympics.


Prof. Susan Varghese, the nursing principal of Dr. M. V. Shetty College, delivered the vote of thanks.
