Dr. Hegde also released cotton bags manufactured by self-help groups.

Speaking on the occasion, he expressed regrets that people are least bothered about the environment. Stating that plastic bags wreck the environment, he said that the public should be educated about the evil effects of plastic use. Lauding self-help groups for manufacturing cotton bags, he expressed hopes that ultimately cotton bags will replace plastic bags.

Speaking on the occasion, RTO Mallikarjuna said that the program will be considered successful only if plastic bags are completely banned. People discard plastic bags all over the place and this should be stopped, he said.

Shrikanth Prabhu, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Manipal Institute of Technology was the chief guest.

Around 50,000 reusable cotton carry bags will be distributed free of cost at malls, petrol pumps, theatres, college campuses, temples, railway stations, and bus stops for the next three months as a part of drive.

Co-founder of Eco Be Green Ashwath Hegde welcomed the guest and gathering and Rotarian Ananth Prabhu proposed vote of thanks.
