Doing everything to ensure monkeypox doesn’t enter Karnataka: Health minister

Bengaluru, Aug 02, 2022: Health Minister K Sudhakar said that Karnataka is doing everything possible to ensure that monkeypox doesn’t enter the state. He added that even if the disease does enter Karnataka, authorities will ensure that it is minimised and would take all measures to curb it.

 

“Under the chairmanship of CM Bommai, we had a meeting with all the technical experts to suggest preventive measures for the Covid pandemic. Similarly, we have the same technical team advising us on monkeypox and other infectious diseases. They are all infectious diseases experts,” said Sudhakar.

“On the eve of the outbreak of monkeypox around the world in 80 countries, we have witnessed about 20,000 cases of monkeypox,” added the health minister.

He further said, “Since we know that there are about 6 reported cases, 4 from Kerala and 2 from Delhi, we want to be alert and vigilant and take all precautionary measures. Karnataka is doing everything possible to ensure that monkeypox does not enter the state. Even if it enters, we will minimise it and take all measures to curb it.”

On Monday, August 1, a 22-year-old Kerala man who returned from the UAE died of monkeypox, marking the first death due to monkeypox in India.

On the same day, a Nigerian man, living in Delhi and having no recent history of foreign travel, tested positive for monkeypox.
