Belthangady, Aug 28, 2025: The case alleging that hundreds of bodies were buried in Dharmasthala village is taking new twists every day. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has now named Chinnayya, who had earlier identified himself as the anonymous complainant, as the first accused (A-1) in the case. Sources confirm that the SIT has booked him under ten different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
These developments are linked to the skull that was recently produced in court. The spot inspection of the location where the skull was allegedly exhumed is yet to be completed. Chinnayya is accused of misleading the court with false information and causing widespread confusion.
Earlier, his statement was recorded before a magistrate under Section 164. However, his latest statement to the SIT contradicts what he had said in court. Based on his new statement, which has also been officially recorded before a judge, further investigation is underway.
The case, which was initially registered under Crime No. 39/25, has now been expanded with several fresh charges. Though official details from the court remain undisclosed, sources say Chinnayya now faces charges under BNS Sections 336 (spreading panic with false information), 230 (misleading public servants), 231 (obstructing judicial work), 229 (perjury), 227 (disturbing public peace), 228 (contempt of court), 240 (misdirecting investigation with false claims), 236 (conspiracy), 233 (wrongful instigation of public), and 248 (filing false complaint and wasting time).
Meanwhile, items belonging to Chinnayya that were found at Mahesh Shetty’s residence have been seized and documented as part of the investigation.
Although charges have now been filed against him, Chinnayya continues to receive witness protection, which is why case-related information is being kept confidential by the court.
