Mangalore, Apr 29: Speaking at a 2-day national-level conference titled “Developing Humane Society through Human Rights Protection: Problems and Prospects” jointly organized by the Human Rights Cell of A. J. Institute of Management (AJIM) and the Human Rights Commission, Bangalore with The Hindu as the media partner on the premises of AJIM at Kottara Chowki on April 20, Friday, Justice S. R. Nayak, the chairperson of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, Bangalore said that human rights and humanity are essential for democracy, adding that the need for enterprises, media, and management authorities to inculcate humane values in society is great at present.

Further, he said that every being has rights and the freedom to live without being discriminated against, pointing out that millions of children are still deprived of a life of dignity and that many communities still live in slavery in India.


Speaking about the caste system, he said that human rights are sacrificed to sustain inequality in society and urged everybody to imbibe humane values. Criticizing the practice of moral policing rampant in coastal regions, he said that nobody has the rights to attack places of worship of other communities. He also criticized the media for its failure to represent the facts in a proper manner and thereby protect human rights. He also spoke of the importance of removing corruption to protect human rights effectively.


Referring to the failure of the government to protect human rights among the marginalized by effective enforcement of the law, he said that progress is possible only by working in unity, coordination, and dialogue among various sectors.


H. R. Deshpande, the principal district and sessions judge, Mangalore, was the chief guest of the event, over which A. J. Shetty, the managing director of A. J. Group, presided.


The valedictory of this conference, which will comprise panel discussions, paper presentations, and technical sessions, will be held on April 30, Sunday at 3:45 p.m.
