Udupi, Dec 21, 2025: A deep-sea fishing boat returning from a fishing trip sank within the Malpe harbour limits on December 18 after its fibre hull cracked, leading to a rapid inflow of seawater.
The vessel Yashasvi, owned by Raju P. Mendon of Badanidiyoor, developed a leak while heading back to the harbour. The tandel and five crew members on board were rescued safely.

According to sources, the incident occurred around 11.30 am when the boat was about 17 nautical miles off Malpe. The bottom of the vessel is believed to have struck an unidentified object, resulting in a crack in the fibre hull. Despite attempts by the crew to prevent water from entering, the efforts proved futile.
Fishing boats Hiranmayi and Mantrasmite, which were in the vicinity, rushed to assist and tried to tow the damaged vessel towards the harbour. However, at around 5 pm, when the boat was nearly eight nautical miles from the coast, it sank.
The loss, including fish catch, fishing nets, diesel and other equipment, has been estimated at around ₹35 lakh.
