Decision on auto fare revision within a week : DC

 Mangalore, Jan 8, 2014: Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim has informed that a decision on revising the autorickshaw fares would be taken within a week’s time.

Presiding over the RTA meet held at the Court Hall of the DC office here on January 7, Tuesday, the Deputy Commissioner assured that the fares would be revised by ensuring that  passengers are not overburdened, while also  doing justice to  autorickshaw drivers.

Continuing, the DC exhorted autorickshaw driver to be courteous with passengers and  willing to take the passengers to their destination instead of refusing. He assured to solve the autorickshaw park related problems.

Shivakumar, in-charge SP who also spoke  pointed out to the ferrying of more number of passengers in autorickshaws in rural areas and added such practices even lead to accidents. There need to be a growing awareness in this regard, he added.

 Autorickshaw drivers union leaders namely Ivan D’Souza, Ali Hassan. LT Suvarna, Vishnmurthi and others who participated  demanded that  the minimum autorickshaw  fare should be increased to Rs 30 for the first one and a half kms and Rs 20 for every next one km travelled.

However, social activist Hanumanth Kamath said it would not  be proper to hike the minimum fare. When Kamath pointed out that most leaders of auto drivers unions were not autorickshaw owners  and neither they drive autorickshaws, the same was resented by the Union leaders.

 However, everything cooled down when the DC  who lost his patience said he will have to dissolve the meeting if pandemonium continued.
