Mangaluru, Jun 2, 2026: With the southwest monsoon already entering Kerala and expected to reach the coastal region by June 4, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has made comprehensive preparations to deal with natural calamities such as flooding, flash floods, and other disaster situations, said Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V.

Addressing a press conference at Prajasoudha in Padil, the Deputy Commissioner said that 115 relief centres have been identified across the district. A total of Rs 3.25 crore has been made available at the tahsildar level across various taluks for emergency relief measures, and additional funds will be provided if required.

Responding to complaints that officials often do not answer phone calls during nighttime emergencies in the monsoon season, Darshan said instructions have been issued to ensure 24x7 mobile call forwarding. Under the new system, any incoming emergency call will be attended by an available official, who will immediately relay the information to the concerned authorities for prompt action.

Engineers have been appointed as Incident Commanders for all 60 wards under the Mangaluru City Corporation, while PDOs and chief officers have been designated as Incident Commanders in 223 gram panchayat areas and 13 local bodies. All Incident Commanders have been directed to remain alert, respond promptly to public grievances, and stay in constant contact with the district control room, he added.

No New Road Digging During Monsoon

The Deputy Commissioner also announced that no new road excavation or digging work related to the Jalasiri water supply project or underground drainage works will be permitted during the next two-and-a-half months of the monsoon season.

He said 92 flood-prone locations have been identified across Dakshina Kannada district, with Belthangady accounting for the highest number at 32 locations and Ullal the lowest with three. Additionally, 88 landslide-prone areas have been identified, including 35 in Belthangady and three in Puttur.

Repairs Approved for 91 Schools and 137 Anganwadis

Darshan H.V. said that repair works in schools and anganwadis had been delayed in the past due to lack of funds and other constraints. This year, however, the District Disaster Management Authority has already approved repairs for 91 schools and 137 anganwadi centres.

A total of Rs 2.5 crore has been sanctioned for anganwadi repairs and Rs 1.5 crore for school repairs. He added that additional funds would be provided if schools, anganwadis, or hospitals require urgent repairs during the rainy season.

Officials in all taluks have been instructed not to allow children or the public to occupy buildings that require major repairs or are at risk of collapse. Concerned departments have also been directed to identify and report unsafe structures that may pose a threat during the monsoon, the Deputy Commissioner said.
