Dakshina Kannada, Udupi receive widespread rain; yellow alert continues till August 9

Mangaluru, Aug 4, 2026: Widespread rainfall continued across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Monday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Yellow Alert and forecasting widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorms until August 9.

Rain eases after morning downpour in Dakshina Kannada

Several parts of Dakshina Kannada, including Mangaluru, Bantwal, Puttur, Ullal, Thokkottu, Talapady, Mudipu, Kalladka, Mani, Uppinangady, Nelyadi, Belthangady, Sullia and Kadaba, received good rainfall during the morning hours. The intensity of rain reduced by the afternoon, with light to moderate showers continuing through the day.

The water level in the Netravathi River, which had risen sharply due to heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats, receded by Monday evening. The river level dropped from 8.3 metres on Sunday evening to 6.4 metres on Monday evening.

As a precautionary measure, members of 15 families from Aladka near Panemangaluru were shifted to safer locations. Although floodwaters that had entered several houses and shops in Bantwal receded by Monday morning, waterlogging continued in some agricultural fields.

Heavy rain continues in Udupi district

Except for Byndoor taluk, most parts of Udupi district received widespread rainfall on Monday. The district witnessed light to moderate showers in the morning under overcast skies, followed by another spell of good rainfall in the afternoon. Heavy rain in rural areas by evening led to increased water flow in streams, rivulets and rivers.

Moderate rainfall was recorded in Udupi, Manipal, Kaup, Uchila, Brahmavar, Kundapur, Hebri and Karkala during the morning, followed by cloudy weather before rain intensified again later in the day.

The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Udupi district for August 4.

Rainfall figures

During the last 24 hours, Karkala recorded the highest rainfall at 42.8 mm, followed by Hebri (41.7 mm), Byndoor (30.6 mm), Kundapur (28.3 mm), Udupi (20.2 mm), Brahmavar (15.7 mm) and Kaup (11 mm). The district’s average rainfall stood at 30.1 mm.

Rivers swell; power line damaged

Continuous rainfall over the past few days in Hebri and Karkala taluks has increased the flow in rivers and streams, raising water levels in low-lying areas. Heavy rain continued in Mala, Hosmaru, Hebri, Kabbinale, Someshwara, Andaru, Mudradi and surrounding regions.

The Mundli Dam on the Swarna River, which supplies drinking water to Karkala town, has reached its full capacity and excess water is being released.

Meanwhile, large trees fell on electricity poles near Seetha River Nisargadhama on the Udupi–Shivamogga National Highway, snapping an 11 kV power line. The incident caused losses worth several lakhs of rupees to MESCOM, officials said.
