Mangaluru, Sep 25, 2025: To act as a bridge between the public and the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and to provide essential legal services to citizens, the process of appointing Nyaya Mitras (Para Legal Volunteers) has begun in Dakshina Kannada district, informed Zaibunnisa, Member-Secretary of DLSA.

Speaking at a press conference at the District Court office hall, she said that 50 to 100 Nyaya Mitras will be appointed under the District Legal Services Authority, while 25 to 50 Nyaya Mitras will be appointed to the Taluk-level Legal Services Committees. Their service term will be limited to one year. Interested candidates can submit applications to the DLSA by October 6.

She explained that Nyaya Mitras, by engaging closely with society, will play a key role in reporting incidents like child marriage, social boycotts, child abduction, and cases of abuse to the concerned authorities, thereby helping ensure protection. They will also assist in survey work conducted by the Legal Services Authority and serve at legal aid clinics.

Applicants with a spirit of service are encouraged to apply. Selected volunteers will receive an honorarium of ₹750 per day for the days they are assigned work.

Currently, under the DLSA, 15 legal aid clinics have been set up at Wenlock District Hospital, taluk hospitals, and prisons. At these centres, lawyers are available one day a week to provide free legal advice, and if necessary, also file cases free of cost. The Authority also regularly visits prisons to extend legal assistance to undertrial prisoners, she added.
