Mangalore, Oct 25, 2010: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Mangalore city committee, organized a protest meet in front of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) on Monday to demand the immediate repair of the city’s interior roads. Over 150 people participated in a protest rally from Jail Road to the MCC office in Lalbhag, shouting slogans against the MCC’s engineers and Mayor Rajani Dugganna.
In his protest speech delivered on the occasion, DYFI District President Muneer Katipalla said that the MCC has forgotten that it ought to repair the inner roads of the city and is focusing only on the major roads. Pointing out that the roads of the interior areas such as Bajal, Suratkal, Panjimogeru, Konchady, Kannur, Kavoor, Shaktinagar, and other areas are in a terrible state of disrepair, making them look like paddy fields instead of roads, he said that whenever an organization protests against it, the MCC makes some empty promises, which it never keeps.
The residents and motorists have to bear the burnt of it, he said and added that some roads haven’t seen asphalting in years. He warned that the DYFI will intensify its protests if the MCC fails to take immediate action. Speaking about the poor condition of the drains, he said that the district administration doesn’t care for the welfare of the citizens.
B. K. Imthiyaz, the president of Mangalore city committee of DYFI, and many other DYFI activists participated in the protest. The DYFI later submitted a memorandum to K. N. Vijayaprakash, the commissioner of MCC.
