DK ZP wins Rs. 25 lakh award under PEAIS

Mangalore, April 25, 2012 : The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat (ZP) has won an award of Rs. 25 lakh under the Panchayat Empowerment and Accountability Incentive Scheme (PEAIS).


It may be recalled that the ZP recently won the Nirmal Gram Pursakar.

Shailaja Bhat, the president of the ZP, received the award from Jairam Ramesh, the rural development minister, in New Delhi in the presence of Jagadish Shettar, the state minister for rural development and Panchayat Raj, and V. Kishore Chandra Deo, the union cabinet minister for tribal affairs and Panchayat Raj. This award is instituted by the union government’s Department of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development.

Speaking on this occasion, Ms. Bhat said that the DK ZP is one of the 13 ZPs to receive this award and that she is the sixth woman ZP president to receive it.

Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the CEO of the ZP, said that six parameters were taken into consideration while choosing the award winners. These parameters included conducting of meetings, regularity of conducting meetings, standards of audit accounts and ZP administration, level of member participation in planning, scheme implementation, achieving targets, and transparency.
