Mangaluru, January 10, 2026: Tourism in the coastal region should be developed on the lines of Kerala and Goa, said Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar in Mangaluru.
He admitted that both the Congress and BJP governments have failed to adequately develop tourism. People from Mangaluru are forced to migrate to Mumbai, Dubai, and Bengaluru for jobs, as the region’s natural resources have not been properly utilized.
He said he has spoken to all the MLAs from the region, who have shown keen interest in the initiative. Discussions have already been held on a tourism policy, and there is a need to introduce a special development plan for Mangaluru.
Many entrepreneurs based abroad, as well as in Mumbai and Bengaluru, have expressed their willingness to return to their hometown and invest. They have assured cooperation and investment, which would help create employment opportunities for the local youth. The youth here are talented and aware, and the aim is to generate jobs locally instead of forcing them to seek employment overseas.
In this context, a dedicated tourism policy will be formulated for the coastal belt. Discussions will be held with entrepreneurs and officials to identify existing issues and assess how the government can support development efforts. Public–private partnership will also be required.
He emphasized that entrepreneurs and elected representatives must cooperate and share their suggestions. Officials from CRZ, Defence, and the Coastal Police have also been invited for consultations. Pointing out the lack of even a single five-star hotel in the region, he said all necessary infrastructure must be developed.
