DCC observes Nehru’s 46th death anniversary

Mangalore, May 27: The members of Dakshina Kannada Distrcit Congress Committee observed the 47th death anniversary of former Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru at District congress Committee office on Friday, May 27.

 

The members, who were present at the office, observed two-minute silence and paid floral tribute to the portrait of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Ramanatha Rai appraised Nehru as a visionary man, a true democrat and the architect of modern India, who played an important role in the country’s struggle for independence. He highlighted the role of Nehru in building a new India and setting the foundations for a strong and united India while advocating for world peace through the principles of Panchsheel and Non-Alignment Movement.

He said Nehru was the architect of modern India and committed to elimination of poverty, all round upliftment of the downtrodden.

He was also a key figure in international politics in the post-war period, and was one of the founding figures of the Non-Aligned Movement.

About Pandit Jawarhar Lal Nehru
Born on Nov 14, 1889 in Allahabad, Nehru graduated from Cambridge University and returned to India in 1912. He played an important role in international politics during the post-war period.

Popularly known as Panditji, Nehru was also a scholar, a writer, and an amateur historian. He was one of the youngest leaders of the Indian National Congress and was put in prison at least 7 times.  

He served as the prime minister of Independent India from Aug 15, 1947 to May 27, 1964.
