Cyclone Tauktae: Rain, sea erosion leave trail of destruction on coast

Mangaluru, May 16, 2021: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi experienced the impact of Cyclone Tauktae on Saturday.

Residents of several areas in Someshwara, Uchila, Bettampady, Ullal, Sasihitlu are living in fear, with the high tide sweeping away many structures on the seashore. Many houses on the shores of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district have been flooded.



Heavy rain and gales that began in the morning were followed by the rough sea eroding the shore. While two houses were completely damaged in Someshwara, one collapsed in Uchila due to sea erosion . A Hindu Rudra Bhumi (crematorium) on the shore at Someshwara was partially damaged.

Forty houses on an island near Battappady were isolated due to flooding. Residents, with the help of Someshwara town municipality and police, shifted their family members using boats. Many families were moved to a madrassa in Uchila and 37 people from Hoige Bazar were shifted to a government school.

Many coconut trees on the shores in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts were washed away. A guesthouse at Munda Beach in Sasihitlu and the adjacent road were damaged due to erosion. Trawlers and other fishing boats were anchored after the Coast Guard issued a warning.

Work on Adyar dam affected
The ongoing work on the Adyar-Harekala vented dam-cum bridge was affected as the Netravati river swelled with heavy flow of water. Several materials including mud used for the construction work were washed away into the river.

Heavy rain for 5 more days
The Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru, warned of thunderstorms and heavy rain along the coast for the next five days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gales reaching 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places till 8.30am on Sunday. Very heavy rain is likely in areas of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
