Mangaluru, June 16, 2025: A portion of Kettikkal Gudda (a hillock) at Kettikal, on the National Highway 169 (Mangaluru-Moodbidri-Karkala), on the outskirts of the city, slipped on Saturday night. However, it did not hit the traffic movement on the highway.

The Mangaluru Project Office of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) stated in a press release that no severe damage was caused by the landslide, and the prompt response helped manage the situation effectively.

Kethikal landslide

It said that the landslide resulted in the accumulation of displaced soil on one side of the highway. The NHAI mobilised its team to the site, and the soil was removed. Proper safety measures were taken and traffic was diverted to ensure smooth movement at the location, the NHAI said.

Another landslide occurred on the outskirts of the city, between the Jokatte and Padil sections of the railway line, on Sunday. This came after the first landslide, which took place at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, was cleared during the night, allowing trains to resume their journey.

A railway official stated that, due to the second landslide, trains were operated on the single line on Sunday until the debris was cleared and both tracks were certified fit for operation at 4 p.m.

“As heavy rains are expected to continue, affected residents can come to the temple to have lunch,” Mr. Alva said.
