Corporators complain of footpath encroachment ; Mayor’s directive to start eviction drive

Mangaluru, Feb 17, 2021:      Following complaints from several corporators that footpaths at many places in the city have been encroached by street vendors,  Mayor Diwaker Pandeshwar has instructed   the officials to evict  unauthorised street vendors to ensure smooth movement of pedestrians.

The directive was issued  at the  traffic co-ordination committee meeting held at the City Corporation  meeting hall on February 16, Tuesday.

The Mayor said  stern action will be taken against those who have unauthorisedly encroached footpaths and added that the MCC has allowed vendors to sell in push carts.

DCP Crime and Traffic, Vinay A Gaonkar who was present, asked MCC to provide a separate team and two vehicles to  clear the footpaths of unauthorised encroachment.

There were even complaints of autorickshaw drivers charging excessive fares. Reacting to the same the DCP said the public can  lodge a complaint along with the vehicle number.

On the traffic problems in the city, he suggested the MCC to form an Expert Committee to study the issue and find solutions.

Several Corporators present in the meeting raised various issues pertaining to traffic.

MCC Commissioner Akshy Shridhar said the Corporation will form two dedicated teams for Mangaluru and Suratkal to  initiate the process of eviction of unauthorised street vendors.
