Consider ’Literature’ as a pillar of democracy: Dr. Ravishankar Rao

Surathkal, Sep 25, 2025: “Young people must grasp the values of democracy through literature and work to strengthen them,” said renowned thinker and retired Mangalore University English professor, Dr. Ravishankar Rao.

He was speaking at the joint inauguration of Vidyarthivani – the campus wall magazine – and the International Day of Democracy celebrations held at Govindas College, Surathkal. The event was jointly organized by the Vidyarthivani editorial board and the Department of Political Science.

“Literature is more than an art form,” Dr. Rao observed. “It must act as a vehicle for social transformation. Stories, poetry, essays, and vachana literature can all be powerful tools to nurture democratic values.” Commending the students’ creativity, he called Vidyarthivani a model of meaningful student expression.

College Administrative Director Prof. Ramesh Bhat emphasized that socially conscious youth are the true guardians of democracy, while Principal Prof. Harish Acharya praised the students for their creativity and awareness of democratic principles.

Dr. Ashalatha P., Head of the Political Science Department and program coordinator, delivered the welcome address. On the occasion, second-year B.A. student Ishika was felicitated for her contributions.

Others present included Student Welfare Officer Dr. Sowmya Praveen, Librarian Dr. Sujatha, faculty members Daya Suvarna, Dr. Vijayalakshmi, Dr. Karthik, Dr. Ganesh Acharya, Dr. Santosh, and editorial board members Akshata, Ramitha, and Nataraj Joshi. Student representatives Mahesh and Prapti also participated.

Dr. Sudha U. of the Political Science Department extended a formal welcome, Hindi Department’s Ms. Jyoti Kamath delivered the vote of thanks, while English lecturer Ms. Sharmitha compered the event. The editorial program was hosted by Tejaswini.
