Congress leaders visit Soorinje in jail

Mangalore, Nov 10, 2012: A number of Congress leaders and members visited Kasturi TV Channel reporter Naveen Soorinje in jail on Nov 9. Later addressing the press, Ramanath Rai, president of the district unit of the Congress, said that Naveen’s arrest is condemnable.

 

Naveen has been arrested in connection with the home stay attack of July 28. It may be recalled that a group of Hindu religious fundamentalists had attacked young people celebrating their friend’s birthday at Morning Mist Home Stay in Padil. Soorinje, along with a camera man, had turned up at the place and recorded the entire scene. It is widely believed that Soorinje has been arrested to suppress evidence and that influential people are behind it.

Voicing his opinions, B. Madhava, secretary of the Karavali Sangarsha Samithi, said that the samithi has decided to organize a mega protest in front of the DC’s office. Stating that the Sangh Parivar is behind the arrest of Soorinje, he said that the culprits would have been out by now if Soorinje hadn’t recorded the entire event. Stating that the Sangh Parivar has pressurized the police to arrest Soorinje, he said that Soorinje is not a culprit, but an eye witness. He urged the authorities concerned to release Soorinje at the earliest possible.

CPI(M) leaders Yadav Shetty and K. R. Shriyan were also present.
