Hegde secured 3,98,723 votes as against 3,52,999 by Sunil Kumar. The electoral loss for BJP comes at time when the party is in a turmoil following the revolt led by B S Yeddyurappa for his reinstatement as Chief Minister.

The counting of votes cast during the Udupi – Chikmagalur Lok Sabha by-polls on March 18 began on the morning of March 21 Wednesday. Security was beefed up considerably during the counting. Around 66 percent of the eligible voters had cast their votes. Eight halls in T. A. Pai English Medium School were used for the purpose of counting.

The Udupi – Chikmagalur by-polls is the second to be held in Karnataka after DVS took over as the chief minister. Last year, the BJP lost miserably in the Bellary by-polls when independent candidate B. Shreeramulu won.
