Compensation to be paid post verification: Muniappa

Mangalore, May 24:  State Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport, and Highways K. H. Muniappa said that the prime minister and Sonia Gandhi have expressed their condolences to the grieving families of the plane crash victims. He was addressing journalists at a press conference held at the DC office on May 24, Monday. He also said that the central government will give a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to families of the plane crash victims.

The minister expressed his appreciation for the civilians who rushed to the help of the plane crash victims even before the arrival of the police and the firefighting service.


Clarifying issues related to claiming compensation, he said that compensation will be paid according to details collected after verifying identification as per legal procedures. The families will have to wait 2 – 3 days before compensation can be paid; however the delay is because the authorities wish to pay compensations to eligible families only. The minister also said that the Mangalore plane crash is now being subjected to thorough examination. 


Arvind Jadhav, the chairman and managing director of Air India (AI), said that AI was now holding discussion with insurance companies General Insurance Company and Reliance Insurance with regard to payment of compensation. He said that AI has announced an interim compensation, adding that the money will be paid immediately after detailed verification. The families of each plane crash victim above age 12 will receive compensation of Rs 10 lakh and families of victims below the age of 12 will receive Rs 5 lakh. The injured will receive a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from AI. 


IGP Gopal Hosur, Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Additional DC Prabhakar Sharma, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Dr. K. N. Vijay Prakash, and MLA Ramanath Rai were also present for the press conference.
