
Mangalore, Nov 3, 2012: Different art forms and music blended together to drive home the message of combating Malaria, at the colourful Awards Ceremony of MMV Art Competition Mangalore 2012 at Town Hall on Friday, Nov 2. The awards were given to ten winners out of over 5500 students who participated in a massive drive against Malaria organized by Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), Geneva partnered with Kasturba Medical College, Dakshina Kannada Health Department and Malaria Cell of Mangalore City Corporation. The month-long event was coordinated by Centre for Integrated Learning, a city based NGO.


The grand finale witnessed artistic depiction of the cause, effects and prevention of Malaria through different mediums including Theatre and Yakshagana, the local folk art form. The awards ceremony was preceded by an Malaria awareness walk from Deputy Commissioner’s oogcie to the Town Hall. The rally was participated by hundreds of students from different schools in and around the city.
While the students of Infant Jesus Joyland School mesmerized the audience through a theatrical presentation on Malaria, Students picked from different schools enthralled the gathering with a mystical performance through Yakshagana titled `Malariasura Samhara’ (Destruction of Malaria Demon). The colours of the costumes and the energetic dance sequences kept the venue spellbound suddenly erupting with thunderous applause. Girls from Chinmaya School sang the theme song which was exclusively composed for the occasion.
Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Dr. M V Prabhu was the chief guest. Delegates representing the MMV Geneva led by its Executive Vice President (Operations) Diana Cotran from Switzerland were present on the occasion. Dr. P V Venugopal, Advisor to World Health Organisation read out the names of the ten winners. Dr. Shantaram Baliga, Head of Pediatrics at Kasturba Medical College welcomed the gathering and Sachitha Nandagopal proposed the vote of thanks.
The MMV Art Competition 2012 was organized over a span of one month with participation of 5642 students from 24 schools around the city.
The Winners are: Dwithi D Rai (BGS School), Neha J (Canara High School), Megha Manoj (Infant Jesus Joyland School), Suraj Prabhu (Chinmaya School), Shree Raksha (Canara Girls’), Shree Raja Laxmi (Canara Girls’), Shubham R Varnekar (St. Aloysius), Vasudha Kumblekar (Besant English Medium), Hampana N N (Gerosa), Akash Shetty (St. Aloysius).
