Bengaluru, Aug 22, 2026: The draft of Karnataka’s proposed Coastal-Malnad Tourism Policy, designed to harness the tourism potential of the state’s coastal and Malnad regions, will be prepared by September 7, Tourism Minister K J George said on Friday.

George chaired a consultation meeting with elected representatives from the coastal and Malnad districts at Vidhana Soudha to discuss tourism development, investment opportunities and regulatory challenges.

The discussions centred on formulating a comprehensive tourism policy that covers the regions’ diverse attractions, including beaches, religious and cultural destinations, and nature-based tourism sites. The government also invited suggestions on boosting local economic activity, attracting investments and generating employment through tourism.

Highlighting the challenges faced by tourism investors, MLA V Sunil Kumar noted that coastal tourism projects often encounter delays due to approvals required from multiple departments. He proposed introducing a single-window clearance system to simplify procedures and encourage investment.

Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister U T Khader said the coastal belt possesses enormous tourism potential but many projects are hindered by regulations related to the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), eco-sensitive zones and the Forest Department. He urged the government to review approval mechanisms while ensuring environmental protections are maintained.

Udupi district in-charge Minister Rizwan Arshad stressed the importance of creating a favourable environment for the expansion of hotels and tourism-related activities. He suggested that the policy take into account operational timings and other sector-specific requirements based on tourist demand.

George said the government would examine all suggestions received during the meeting and incorporate suitable recommendations into the draft policy. He added that further consultations would be held before the policy is finalised.

“The coastal and Malnad regions are among Karnataka’s most valuable tourism assets. We need a comprehensive policy that addresses local requirements and promotes sustainable growth,” he said.

The minister also said that a Cabinet meeting is expected to be held in Mangaluru soon to discuss the proposed policy and take further decisions.

Tourism Department Secretary Ram Prasath Manohar and several elected representatives from the coastal and Malnad regions were present at the meeting, according to an official statement.
