Mangaluru, November 2, 2026: The Indian Coast Guard rescued a fisherman who fell overboard while fishing nearly 54 nautical miles (100 km) off the Mangaluru coast during a midnight operation on November 1.
The rescue operation was initiated after Coast Guard District Headquarters-3 (CGDHQ-3) received a distress call over VHF radio from the Indian fishing boat Shiva Sagar. The fisherman, identified as Komara Ramu, had fallen into the sea while hauling fishing nets and was subsequently recovered by fellow crew members.
As he required urgent medical attention and evacuation, CGDHQ-3 immediately deployed Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) C-448 to the location.
Despite darkness and challenging sea conditions, the Coast Guard vessel successfully located the fishing boat. The disoriented fisherman was safely evacuated, given immediate first aid and brought to the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) jetty. He was later shifted to the nearest hospital for further treatment.
The fishing boat Shiva Sagar had departed from Mangaluru Fisheries Harbour three days earlier for deep-sea fishing.
