Mangalore, June 7, 2011: Mayor Praveen Anchan said that the Civic Tiger will start operating tomorrow and will evict street vendors in places such as Lady Goschen Hospital and State Bank. The evicted vendors will be given places within Central Market, he promised.
Addressing protestors at a press conference held in his chamber on June 7, Tuesday, the mayor said that the MCC will mark places for street vendors within one month, giving them an opportunity to sell their wares inside Central Market. The vendors are required to vacate the place as soon as they have sold their wares, he said, adding that the vendors are prohibited from permanently reserving their places by leaving their property there.
He also said that the MCC will permit street vendors to sell their wares from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily and urged vendors to keep the place clean and avoid throwing vegetable and fruit waste in their surroundings. He also said that stern action will be taken against street vendors who are seen on the roadside and by the shops even after they have been allotted places inside Central Market.
Speaking on the occasion, Corporator Sudhir Shetty said that the operation will be conducted in places where pedestrians find it very difficult to move. He also said that MCC is planning to allot a place for vendors and name it as Vendors Street.
Assuring that the MCC does not intend to harm poor vendors, he said that the MCC cannot ignore public problems. He added that vendors who agree to move into the Central Market will have to pay a daily rent of Rs. 2.
Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the commissioner, and Geetha Nayak, the deputy mayor, were also present.
