City police arrest 4 persons in connection with forgery and extortion cases

Mangalore, Nov 9, 2012 : Mangalore Police Commissioner Manish Karbikar announced at a press meet held on Nov 8, Thursday that the city police have arrested four persons in connection with two different crimes related to extortion and forgery.

Forged certificates

Mohammed Shahid of Kerala and Avinash Shetty of Suratkal were arrested for forging school and degree certificates. The duo, through companies called Dreams Career and Navabharath Education and Research Foundation, cheated hundreds of students by providing fake degree certificates.

The two forged certificates of top universities and institutions such as Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University in Agra, Chhattisgarh University, Dr. C. V. Raman University in Bilaspur, SSCL Board in Karnataka, Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, Bharathiya Shiksha Parishad of UP, Jamia Millia University of Sikkim, Central Board of Open School Education of Meerut, Vinayaka Mission University of New Delhi, STED Council of Thiruvananthapuram, EIILM University of UP, and CMJ University of UP. They also provided fake migration certificates to students.


The two have been running this forgery business for the past 10 years. They would charge anywhere between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 1,20,000 for the certificates, depending on the course.


The police arrested the two from the Dream Career office in Bendoorwell and Navabharat Education Research Foundation office in MG Road.


Mr. Karbikar said that the universities and boards that the two claimed affiliation to stated that they had nothing to do with them.


The police have seized 70 certificates, 2 computers, Rs. 1 lakh, credit cards, 8 mobile phones, two laptops, a scanner, and a color printer from the two. They have also registered cases against them under Sections 468, 471, and 420 of the Indian Penal Code.


Venkatesh Prasanna, city crime branch inspector, said that Avinash Shetty is an MBA graduate, who has played a role in a Kannada movie. He might be having links in Kerala and the Kerala police are investigating that angle of the case.

The police have also arrested two associates of underworld dons Kaliyogisha and Ravi Poojary. Taranatha and Subrahmanya were trying to extort money from rich entrepreneurs in Mangalore.

 
The two used to tell the businessmen to keep the money at a milk booth in PVS Circle. Mangalore Police Commissioner Manish Karbikar ordered a raid on the milk booth, following which the police arrested the two men and seized 8 mobile phones and Rs. 1 lakh from them.

Stating that the investigation is still in its primary stage, Karbikar said that the police will reveal more details after investigating the case.


He said that the extortion money was meant for Dinesh and Prathap, both associates of Ravi Poojary, who are now in jail in connection with Naushad Kashimji’s murder.


Police interrogation revealed that Subrahmanya was also involved in the same murder case, adding that he was once a barber, whose salon was once raided. The police had seized 3 pistols from him after that raid.


DCP Muthuraya and DCP Dharmaiah were also present.
