Chess Competition: Mangalorean Gritty Shalon emerges champion

Mangalore, May 5: Shalon Joanne Pais of Mangalore drew with Mysore’s BN Gangamma in the final round to win the Karnataka State Women’s chess championship here on Wednesday.

Earlier, Shalon won her fourth round match against K Manasa of Mangalore. Shalon finished with four points, half a point clear of her opponents, to take the title.


Manasa along with Gangamma, Vanessa D’Souza and Andria L D’Souza finished with three-and-a-half points. Manasa claimed second place courtesy a better progressive score with Gangamma placing third. Vanessa and Andria came in fourth and fifth, respectively.


Shalon, Manasa, Gangamma and Vanessa D’Souza will represent Karnataka in the Women’s National B chess championship.


Final ranking: Shalon Joanne Pais (4) 1; Manasa K (3.5) 2; Gangamma BN (3.5) 3; Vanessa D`Souza (3.5) 4; Andria L D`Souza (3.5) 5.
