Belthangady, Aug 26, 2025: New rules have been introduced for vehicles traveling at night through Charmadi Ghat, the vital link between Chikkamagaluru and the coastal region. As per the new system, all vehicles passing through the check-post at night must undergo mandatory inspection.
The move comes in response to repeated complaints of cattle theft and other criminal activities in the ghat during night hours. To curb these incidents, police have enforced stricter regulations. Vehicles passing through Kottigehara check-post at night will now be allowed to move only after complete inspection and in groups of five.
The existing barricade at Kottigehara will be replaced with a new boom barrier, and a PSI-led police team will be deployed on duty at night. Reports had also emerged of cattle thieves misusing a 1.5 km stretch of road in the area. Since a few houses are located along this route, discussions were held with locals, and a gate will be installed there, which will remain closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The initiative has been planned by Superintendent of Police Dr. Vikram Amathe to put a check on cattle theft and other crimes in the Charmadi Ghat region.
