Mangalore, July 20, 2013 : Union Minister for Urban Development Kamalnath has assured Minister for Surface Transport Oscar Fernandes that the Centre was ready to release Rs 200 crores to Mangalore city for the development of infrastructure under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JN-NURM), provided the state government sends a proposal in this regard.
Earlier, Oscar who met Kamalnath had appealed the latter to extend the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme even to Mangalore. The Union Minister has assured to sanction Rs 100 crores immediately and the balance Rs 100 crores once the state government submits a proposal. The Minister has also assured to provide low-floor buses to Mangalore under the scheme.
Oscar had even highlighted the need to bring Mangalore under the scheme as it was unable to achieve much for want of funds and for want of government patronage. He also told Kamalnath that Mangalore stood first in the state in tax collection and was also in the lead in tourism promotion and educational sector.
