Mangaluru, Jan 18, 2026: The Centre has approved the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for major highway infrastructure projects in Dakshina Kannada, paving the way for easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the region.

The approval includes the widening of the Surathkal–BC Road stretch via the Mangaluru Bypass and the development of service roads along National Highway 66 from Talapady to Kundapur.

DPRs for Key Highway Projects in Dakshina Kannada

BJP MP Captain Brijesh Chowta said the decision would help address long-standing traffic bottlenecks, safety concerns and port connectivity issues. He noted that the identified stretches are key entry points to Mangaluru city and are crucial for daily commuters as well as the movement of goods to and from the New Mangalore Port.

Limited road capacity and the absence of service roads have for years resulted in congestion and increased accident risks along these corridors.

Chowta said the DPR approval followed sustained engagement with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). With formal clearance now granted, consultants have been directed to begin detailed studies.

The DPRs will assess road alignment, provision of service roads, grade-separated junctions, traffic capacity augmentation, safety measures and long-term traffic management solutions.

Welcoming the move, Chowta said the DPRs would provide the technical and administrative foundation for project execution, leading to improved mobility, reduced congestion and enhanced economic activity across the coastal districts. He also thanked Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and NHAI officials for addressing infrastructure demands that have been pending for several years.
