Mangaluru, May 18, 2019: Pumping water from small pockets near Manai and Bhandaribettu along the course of River Swarna was begun in full swing on May 17, Friday. The water pumped from the water pockets flowed towards Baje dam, thus enabling the CMC to continue the task of supplying rationed water.

Udupi CMC is doing so to ensure that the city gets at least some water and the piped water can be supplied till it rains in the catchment areas of Swarna River.

Earthmovers engaged by the district administration are desilting the dam area so that the available water does not get stagnated without flowing into the jackwell of the Udupi CMC.

The jackwell of Udupi CMC in Baje dam area is 14 meters deep and a 200-horsepower (hp) pump is lifting the water and supplying it to the city.

Udupi CMC commissioner Anand Kalholikar said that the pumping of water from the waterholes would continue on Saturday. But, desilting of the dam area would be taken up after tenders are floated.

"Udupi DC Hephsiba Rani Korlapati has instructed the CMC to float tenders for dredging work so that the storage capacity of the dam increases by next summer," he said.
