Byndoor: Life jackets save 9 fishermen after boat capsizes in rough sea near Uppunda

Byndoor, Aug 4, 2025: A fishing boat capsized after being caught in high sea waves, but nine fishermen on board survived as they were wearing life jackets. The incident occurred on Sunday morning near Uppunda Madikal in Byndoor taluk.

The fishermen who escaped the mishap have been identified as Chandra Kharvi, Pramod, Prajwal, Gautham, Bhaskar, Yogiraj, Govind, Babu Kharvi, and Deepak, all residents of Uppunda. Around 11 a.m., they had ventured out to sea for fishing in the boat Shivaprasad, owned by Sharada Kharvi of Uppunda. The boat reportedly overturned near Madikal L.P. due to strong waves.

All nine fishermen fell into the sea but managed to stay afloat with the help of life jackets. Other fishermen on the shore quickly threw ropes and rescued them safely. The capsizing caused severe damage to the boat, including the engine, nets, and fishing equipment worth lakhs of rupees.

Sub-Inspector Subrahmanya of the Coastal Security Police Station, along with staff members Raghavendra Devadiga, Eshwar, Nagesh, Satish, Ramesh, Vijay, and KND personnel Girish and Jayaraj, visited the spot.
